In an all-Premier League showdown on Thursday evening, Burnley and Sheffield United will turn their attention to EFL Cup duties when they meet at an empty Turf Moor.

Opening up the new campaign in horror show fashion, the Blades had to settle for a 2-0 defeat at home against Wolves on Monday evening and could be showing the same issues that haunted them earlier in the summer.

On the flip side, given an extra week to recover and raring to make a return to action in Lancashire in midweek, Burnley will simply be hoping to carry on from where they left off back in July.

Despite signing off their campaign with a 2-1 defeat against Brighton on the final round of fixtures, Thursday’s hosts lost just one of their final eight top-flight appearances and will be looking to make a statement at Turf Moor.

With the two sides playing out a 1-1 draw when they faced off in the Premier League back in July, you might be interested to know a similar stalemate can be found priced at 9/4 with Ladbrokes.

A low-scoring night in Lancashire?

Although Sean Dyche was rightfully disappointed to have seen his side end the extended 2019/2020 campaign with a shock 2-1 defeat at home against Brighton back in July, Burnley managed to land themselves yet another top-half finish.

While the Clarets might have cemented their spot as one of the Premier League’s most stable outfits, Thursday’s hosts had shown some continued issues in the final third and the failure to add a new striker has upset some around Turf Moor.

Despite marking their return from the enforced break by taking points off of both Wolves and champions Liverpool, Burnley only managed to bag more than a single goal in any of their final 11 top-flight appearances on the bounce.

You might be interested to know, Dyche’s side can be found priced at 1/2 with William Hill to once again bag under 1.5 goals on EFL Cup duties in midweek.

Elsewhere, despite being heavily linked with a potential move away from Lancashire before the transfer window closes next month, James Tarkowski is expected to start alongside Ben Mee.

A nightmare start for Sheffield

While Sheffield United might have cemented their spot as the Premier League’s surprise package after landing their own top-half finish earlier in the summer, Chris Wilder couldn’t have wished for a worse start on Monday evening.

Shipping two goals in the opening six minutes at home against Wolves earlier in the week, the Blades also struggled to find their feet after returning from football’s enforced break and Wilder will be desperate to end their extended rut.

Signing off the extended 2019/2020 campaign with a 3-1 hammering away at Southampton, United have now lost their last four top-flight contests on the bounce and have also really struggled to find a clinical edge.

Drawing a blank on their Premier League opener at Bramall Lane, Thursday’s guests managed to land just a pair of points over their eight top-tier contests following the restart.

You might be interested to know, along with back-to-back 3-0 hammerings at the hands of Newcastle and Manchester United back in June, Wilder’s side drew a blank in four of their final six away fixtures.

The Blades are priced at 12/5 with Paddy Power to draw another blank at Turf Moor this week.
