Burnley vs Southampton Betting Preview | 10 Aug 2019

12 months on from having to divide their attention between both European qualification and the start of the Premier League campaign, Burnley will be looking to start the New Year brightly when they open the 2019/2020 season at Turf Moor on Saturday.

With Southampton making the trip Lancashire this weekend, both sides spent the majority of last season flirting with the drop zone and could only muster 15th and 16th finishes respectively.

Although both Sean Dyche and Ralph Hasenhüttl have taken different approaches during the summer transfer window, Southampton and Burnley have found some much-needed momentum during their pre-season preparations.

Including a thumping 6-1 win against Ligue 1 outfit Nice in their penultimate pre-season appearance, the Clarets picked up victories over Parma and Fleetwood with a dramatic 2-2 draw against Wigan sandwiched in between.

Scoring at least a pair of goals in each of those four outings, Saturday’s hosts are not the only side who have shown some real improvements over the summer.

With Southampton ending their pre-season tour with four consecutive victories and also scoring at least two goals in each of those appearances, you will be interested to know that both sides can be found at 5/6 with Bet365 to open their goalscoring accounts this weekend.

Survival is key at Turf Moor

Despite securing a historic 7th place finish at the end of the 2017/2018 campaign and enjoying a bright summer, Burnley are still heavily tipped to find themselves at the heart of a relegation scrap.

Already pencilled in as low as 15/8 with Betfair to find themselves in the bottom three come May, Dyche has once again made it clear that Premier League survival is their sole benchmark.

Only adding a handful of signings to a squad that helped them secure a fourth consecutive season in the top-flight, fans on Turf Moor will be most excited to see them finish the transfer window with James Tarkowski still at the club.

Elsewhere, the Clarets have also bolstered their attacking options with former striker Jay Rodriguez returning to the club in a deal worth £10million.

Helping West Brom reach the Championship Play-offs last season, the former Saints man bagged 22 league goals last year and is priced at 11/5 with Ladbrokes to find the net against his former club this weekend.

Nathan Redmond to spearhead Southampton’s charge?

Although Sean Dyce may have opted to make minimal changes to his squad during the transfer window, Saints boss Ralph Hasenhüttl has started quite the shakeup at St. Mary’s.

With the former RB Leipzig boss opting to allow the likes of Charlie Austin and Mario Lermina to end their tenures on the South Coast this summer, fans will be excited by the news that Nathan Redmond has signed a new long-term deal.

Speaking on Deadline Day following Redmond’s contract extension, Hasenhüttl said: “he is very important for Southampton and I think it’s a massive signal for the club”.

The England international can be found at 4/1 with Ladbrokes to find the net at Turf Moor on Saturday afternoon.

Although both sides enjoyed a bright pre-season run and will be dreaming of securing their Premier League status more empathically this year, it is worth noting that the last three matchups between Southampton and Burnley have finished with a draw.
