Turning their attention to EFL Cup duties after making their Premier League return earlier in the week, Manchester City will welcome Bournemouth to the Etihad on Thursday night.

Avoiding a second-half scare and landing a 3-1 win away at top-four outsiders Wolves on Monday night, the former champions really bounced back from their European heartbreak out in Portugal last month.

On the flip side, losing their Premier League status earlier in the summer, Bournemouth could only muster a 1-1 draw away at Middlesbrough over the weekend and could be in for an overwhelming test in midweek.

Hit with a 2-1 defeat when they last faced off against the Sky Blues back in July, the Cherries have now lost each of their last 10 straight meetings against Thursday’s hosts, shipping at least a pair of goals in all bar one of those defeats.

De Bruyne dazzles

Marking their Premier League return with a 3-1 win away at Wolves earlier in the week and certainly laying down a real marker to Liverpool, Pep Guardiola’s side have their sights firmly set on reclaiming their Premier League crown this season.

Bouncing back from their shock 3-1 defeat against Lyon in the Champions League quarter-finals out in Portugal last month, the former Barcelona boss would have been hugely excited to see talisman Kevin De Bruyne open his account in the Midlands.

Converting from the spot and handed the Man of the Match award at Molineux after a stunning return to action, the 29-year-old also signed off last year’s campaign with three strikes in as many appearances.

In fact, since the start of last season, De Bruyne has been directly involved in more Premier League goals (35 – 14 goals, 21 assists) than any other player – three ahead of Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah.

Mission Impossible for the Cherries?

Although Bournemouth might have managed to end their pre-season preparations with a dramatic 5-3 win against West Ham at the London Stadium earlier in the month, their second-half display over the weekend certainly left allot to the imagination.

Throwing away the lead late on and having to settle for a point away at a struggling Middlesbrough on Saturday afternoon, many have pondered how the Cherries will adjust to life without Eddie Howe.

Sacrificing their Premier League status this summer and watching the likes of Callum Wilson secure a move away from the South Coast, Thursday’s trip to the Etihad could be a cruel step up in class for new boss Jason Tindall.

With former Liverpool starlet Dominic Solanke now the man leading Bournemouth’s line, the Cherries should take some solace from the fact that they have managed to come away with a consolation strike in three of their last four meetings against the Sky Blues.
