Bouncing back from their Molineux heartbreak with a deserved victory over Sheffield United on Sunday, Manchester City are simply looking to dethrone Leicester to second spot when they host Everton on New Year’s Day.
While their defeat against Wolves last week may have brought all but an end to their chances of reclaiming their Premier League crown, the Sky Blues have won five of their other six matches across all competitions and also have a Champions League knockout tie on the horizon.
On the flip side, Pep Guardiola’s men are not the only outfit who picked up an impressive result over the weekend.
With new Everton boss Carlo Ancelloti clearly having an immediate impact at Goodison Park, the Toffees have landed back-to-back victories since the Italian took charge and they have now found a route into the top half.
Sadly for Wednesday’s guests, Everton do hold some rather unpleasant memories against the New Year’s Day hosts.
Losing their last four straight meetings with City, including a 3-1 defeat back in September, you might be interested to know that Everton also suffered back-to-back 3-1 losses against the Sky Blues last season and an identical scoreline can be found at 10/1 with Bet365.
A title lost for City
While Pep Guardiola’s side may have bounced back with a convincing 2-0 win over surprise package Sheffield United last weekend, the former Barcelona boss was the first to admit that City’s title chase is all but over.
Opening the New Year’s Day fixtures sat 14 points adrift of the runaway league leaders and now in a battle with a resurging Leicester to clinch a silver medal, the defending champions are priced as high as 14/1 with William Hill to mount what would be an iconic comeback and lift their third consecutive title come May.
However, there is no doubt that fans around the Etihad will be glad to see leading marksman and attacking talisman Sergio Aguero make a return from injury.
Finding the net against the Blades on Sunday, the Argentina striker has scored 22 goals in the Premier League in 2019 – only in 2016 has he scored more in the competition within a calendar year when he recorded 27 strikes.
You might be interested to know that Aguero is pencilled in at 8/13 with Coral to open his 2020 with a goal on Wednesday.
Everton on the rise?
Although Everton may have found themselves at the heart of a relegation scrap entering December, the Toffees have started to shine since bringing in Carlo Ancelotti to replace Marco Silva.
Picking up a 2-1 win away at Newcastle over the weekend and handing the Magpies just their second defeat at St. James’ Park this season, the Blues find themselves in the midst of a five-match Premier League unbeaten run.
One man who has really caught the eye at the start of Ancelotti’s tenure has been the red-hot Dominic Calvert-Lewin.
With the 22-year-olds new boss announcing that the England youth international has the potential to be one of the best strikers in Europe, Everton’s starlet has scored all three of their goals under the Italian and has already broken his overall season PB with eight strikes.
Also finding the net against City when the two sides faced off back in September, you might be interested to know that Calvert-Lewin can be found at 7/2 with 888Sport to find the net in his third consecutive appearance in midweek.
