Hoping to cash in and make it back-to-back Premier League victories on Sunday afternoon, Newcastle will welcome Brighton to an empty St. James’ Park this weekend.

While the Magpies might have endured what was a worrying pre-season summer run, Steve Bruce’s men managed to secure a deserved 2-0 win away at West Ham last week and suddenly the mood in their camp appears to be on the rise.

On the flip side, also managing to come past lower league opposition the EFL Cup in midweek and cruising past League One Portsmouth thanks to a 4-0 romp at the Amex, Brighton will be desperate to bounce back from their opening day 3-1 defeat at the hands of Chelsea on Monday night.

However, it is worth noting that Newcastle and Brighton do have a habit of producing low-scoring encounters when they have previously faced off.

Including back-to-back 0-0 stalemates when the two sides faced off in the extended 2019/2020 campaign, each of the last six straight meetings have seen under 2.5 goals by full-time. A similar outcome on Sunday afternoon can be found priced at 4/7 with Ladbrokes.

Wilson opens his account

While there might have been a real dark cloud forming over St. James’ Park earlier in the summer, there is no doubt that Newcastle’s new arrivals made an immediate impact in the capital last weekend.

Picking up a deserved 2-0 win away at West Ham and also coming past Blackburn on EFL Cup duties in midweek, Steve Bruce would have been hugely excited to see Callum Wilson open his account in East London.

Along with watching fellow debutant Jeff Hendrick find the net last weekend, Newcastle’s new £20million striker opened the scoring against the Hammers and many in the Magpies’ camp feel that former Bournemouth man has been a pivotal arrival.

Clearly seen as Bruce’s leading marksman after what was a toothless campaign overall for them last season, you might be interested to know that the England international is priced at 2/1 with Paddy Power to bag back-to-back Premier League strikes on Sunday afternoon.

Elsewhere, bagging the winner against Blackburn earlier in the week, another summer arrival in Ryan Fraser could be pushing for a start at St. James’.

An away day upset?

While on paper Brighton might have opened their Premier League campaign with a 3-1 defeat at home against Chelsea, the Seagulls did put in a spirited display and Graham Potter would have taken plenty of positives away.

Picking up a morale-boosting 4-0 romp against League One outfit Portsmouth on Thursday night, the one-time Swansea boss would have been hugely excited by his side’s eye-catching performances on the road earlier in the summer.

Signing off the extended 2019/2020 campaign with an impressive 2-1 win away at Turf Moor, the South Coast side were unbeaten in each of their final seven Premier League appearances away from the Amex.

Even more impressive, managing to secure their top-flight status after returning from football’s enforced break, Brighton took points off of the likes of Wolves, Leicester and Sheffield United on that seven-match unbeaten run on the road.

You might be interested to know, along with a 1-0 win when they made the trip to St. James’ Park back in 2018, they are unbeaten in each of their last three trips up North and a shock victory this weekend can be found priced at 15/8 with 888Sport.
